Drawing 1. Part 2. Project 5. Pets and other animals. Research point.

 Gilles Aillaud. 1928-2005.

I’m so inspired and excited, after much research, to discover the drawings and painting of this recently passed French artist. I have posted both drawings and paintings as both show strengths in different areas, and I want to share this work with other OCA students. The three drawings/ lithographs below all have different points of appeal for me.aillaud-serpentThis drawing is great for research in terms of surface texture. You can see three distinct elements between the wood, the snake and the wire roof of the tank. Somehow, I can also sense the weight of these objects within the frame of the drawing.

I like this piece in terms of composition, the animals shape cut against the white background. The simple black line of the wall gives it context and weight.

The cool blue of the interior seems to aid in adding depth and space to this painting, contrasting the ochre of the lions bodies. Their shadows are unconvincing, yet add to the pictures’ harmony and bulk to the animals depicted.

The shapes made by the parrots is what stands out for me in this painting. Their bodies almost at right angles to each other mirror the lines of the cage. There is a quiet symmetry within the image. He’s brought the blue into the right of the painting, as reflections on the leaves.

The bodies of the two turtles swimming together cut an interesting positive shape against the background, making the negative space just as important as the turtles in terms of composition.
