Drawing 1. Part 4. Project 5. Exercise 1. Single moving figure.

I wish this exercise was introduced at the beginning of part 4. Although I should take a sketchbook with me at all times, I think I would have been more motivated to build up a large body of quick sketches, rather than have to squeeze in as many as possible in a short time.

I took my sketchbook to the local pool and drew some of the characters around me. In the main, mums with younger children, waiting for their siblings to finish swimming lessons.IMGP9581 (1)

I didn’t manage to get any movement in this as I sketched this before reading the brief.

The following day I cycled to Ueno Park,  knowing that it would be crowded, good for drawing ‘groups of people’, required in project 5, exercise 2.IMG_2776

The coming of the cherry blossom brought tourists in droves, there were so many people, it was hard to decide what to draw, where to sit and somewhere private where people weren’t pointing cameras over my shoulder.

This little girl kept shifting between watching me draw her, and sitting with her side to me, eating popcorn. The result is confused and mirrors my anxiety at being watched.

Her grandfather took over popcorn eating duties, he was much stiller.

Next to me was a homeless lady, who was moving very slowly. Tucked inside multiple coats, fiddling with her fingers. I was conscious to draw her as she sat directly next to me. She didn’t seem to care that I had my gaze in her direction. I made another drawing.

If she was bothered, she showed this by deciding to take off her shoes and shifting constantly. I moved to a cafe where it was less hectic, and their were fewer onlookers.
