Research point

“Look for historic and contemporary artists whose work involves the underlying structure of the body.”
Of course Da Vinci and Michelangelo come to mind when thinking about the use of anatomy in art, also Grey’s Anatomy – a book which I studied in depth while studying illustration at degree level.

Historic artist – Antonio Del Pollaiolo 1429 – 1498

antonio pollaiulo

A florence born artist, (painter, sculptor, metalworker) along with his brother used to, reportedly, perform dissections to learn more about human anatomy to aid their knowledge and understanding of the human body.

Above is his most famous surviving engraving Battle of the Nude Men. It has been said that his main contribution to Florentine painting lay in his analysis of the human body.

Contemporary artist – Fernando Vicente 1963 – present

A Madrid born illustrator turned painter who uses a mixture of photos and paint to create images that shot him to fame in the eighties.

He states that he finds the inside of the human body as fascinating and curious as the exterior, and has spent an enormous amount of time studying books on the human anatomy, and has had a long term fascination with science.
